Massage Techniques to Induce Sleep

It is well understood that massage is an effective way to relax the mind and body, slow the brain waves, and aid the transition from waking to sleep. What you might not yet know is that one specific massage technique in particular can send signals directly to the “sleep center” of the brain.

One of the functions of the solitary tract nucleus in the medulla oblongata, which connects the spine to the brain, is to send signals to the preoptic area of the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for sleep. Massaging of the carotid arteries (which supply the brain with blood) within the throat and neck is a proven way to cause someone to fall asleep. Indeed the word “carotid” comes from a Greek word that means “causing deep sleep.”

In Bali, massage has long been used as a practice to facilitate falling asleep. Balyan mapons are a special class of masseurs that focus on nerve and muscle massage and are able to use massage to compel all kinds of effects within the body: release evil karma, treat disease and bone fractures, and interrupt pregnancy.

A unique form of massage practiced by balyan mapons is one that induces the subject to lose consciousness almost immediately involves two minutes of bilateral pressure on the carotid triangle (the area between the throat and chin). However, this type of message is not without its dangers when taken to extremes as it could cause a subject to experience a stroke or fall into a coma.

Used in moderation, massage and gentle pressure of the vagus nerve which links up to the medulla oblongata and carotid triangle region sends signals to the sleep center of the brain and is an effective facilitator of sleep.

Here is a helpful YouTube video with some self-massage techniques around the carotid region.

Foot massage is another effective way to send signals of relaxation via the vagus nerve to the brain, as well as lower your heart rate and blood pressure, all of which makes it easier transition to sleep.

Finally, I also find that massaging the gut is helpful to relieve any gastrointestinal tension which can often cause great discomfort when lying down. I travel frequently, so there's never any telling when the stomach bug might hit.

Nothing fancy here, I recommend simply placing an open palm on the belly and rubbing in a circular motion for 10-20 seconds. Serious stomach viruses require medication, and are usually cleared up easily with antibiotics.
